Monday,
April 16, 2007> From
allmightysenators.com: "For those of you who do not know, Landis
is very ill and in the hospital. His kidneys are suffering from
acute renal failure and they've started dialysis to get them working
again. His spirits are very high, but much prayer and good thoughts
are needed.
We
will be taking donations for Landis. Not only does he have no income
right now due to being in the hospital, but the medical bills to
come will most likely be pretty ugly, so you can help Landis pick
his life back up where he left it when he's all better.
To
the many, many of you who have sent your well wishes and prayers,
we thank you so much!! We love you all."

television has come far enough in our direction to actually let
a metal band like us on the air! We are very excited for the opportunity
not only for ourselves, but for the doors it will help to break
down for heavy metal in general. We are flattered to be in this
position, thankful to Conan and his staff for their invitation,
and looking forward to proudly kicking some serious ass on National
TV!!!"

Tuesday,August
15, 2006> Sonia has been touring Israel. She sent the
following letter, which offers her perspective on the situation
over there...
"Dear
Folks,
I am sitting 6,000 miles from my nice little Baltimore home in a
country that I love that is beautiful and torn in war. It is easy
to be Jewish and comfortable in America while soldiers in Israel
and Lebanon shoot to kill. This is real. Although the horrible crime
rate in the states is dangerous and disgusting, I have never in
my life been living, breathing, working, sleeping in an environment
where at any moment in a split second a missle could demolish me
and my world. There is no looking up and saying oh I can run this
way it happens so fast you don’t even see it. There is no
choice. You are just gone.
So
the world I lived in, earlier this week, in Shorashim where 160
missles are launched at us every day for the past few weeks has
been a new level of life, not a new level of fear. The fear is familiar.
Something I cannot control. Like bad turbulence on a plane. Or dodging
tornados across Arkansas like we did last summer or the other natural
disasters. But this work of war is intentional, it doesn’t
have to be and yet when you stand here when you look up at the sky
or walk on the stones that the Jesus walked on that Moses led us
to that Mohammed preached from, it makes perfect sense to understand
that of course this passion for God, for the understanding of who
we are and why the heck we are breathing on the earth today.
In living life with the background of death you have a greater appreciation
of life of the deliberate action of your time; as you have in America
with the possibility of crime and bad weather. But here, with death
in the forground, life is truly irreplaceable…every moment,
every blackberry and I mean dripping blackberry has never seemed
more sensational. More voluptuous, richer, louder, or the acute
awareness of no sound and perfection of peace no rockets no planes
no copters only waves or wind of wild driving on the highway…the
soundless sound of baby turtles crying.
I named the band Disappear Fear, it was not whim. It was that when
Rick, my brother told me when I was 10 there was a bomb that could
kill every one on the planet but that music could stop it. I knew
how important music was to our survival and so in my small gigantic
voice I take this guitar and sing about completing this circle of
humanity…the bottom line is Terry and I are fine.
I did my first concert in a bomb shelter, a miklat, and the night
was amazing, I performed outside at the Harold’s Hoot and
it was beautiful a warm summer evening outside with lit candles
and I was accompanied by howling dogs on my blues songs…in
tune actually, another miracle.
I can identify with Israel in my heart and it deepens as the bombs
fall and the bullets spray, that one country so small just wants
to sing her own song…I don’t exonerate Israel for all
her practices but I do understand her quest and I will stand under
here quest. They tell us the cease fire starts at 7 am tomorrow
that is about the time America goes to sleep. Here in Tel Aviv we
will be waking up and hopefully getting back to work and re thinking
the plan.
We fly home on Thursday until we meet again be safe, fly high. Disappear
fear, already. A big thank you to Laura and Nancy back home and
to Larry and Irit here in Israel and so many of you who have written
to me…I hope you come here and swim in this sea and eat Lebanese
Falafel and visit the other side of the wall…but for now…kiss
your children and your loved ones while you can.
With love,
Sonia

Thursday,
January 19, 2006> It is with sadness that we report
the recent passing of Lowell "Shufflemonster" Schiff and
Mike Smith.
The
following was received from the WAMA
newsletter:
Lowell
"Shufflemonster" Schiff, GrooveQuest's exuberant drummer
and phenomenologist, passed on to rock 'n' roll heaven early on
January 11, 2006. Lowell was battling ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease,
a fatal and debilitating illness) for the last two years, but he
lived life to the fullest and played his drums to the end. His long
and varied music career includes performing as the house drummer
at the DC Gaity Burlesque Theater in the 60s, a year of drumming
with Roy Buchanan at Rand's Rock and Roll Club, two years with the
Richmond Symphony, and a cross-country tour with Little Egypt, a
belly dancer, that included a spot on The Tonight Show Starring
Johnny Carson.
In lieu of flowers,
contributions may be made to Capital Hospice, PO Box 1576, Merrifield,
VA 22116. More details, including Lowell's musical bio, are at www.groovequestproject.com.
Jazz
Drummer Mike Smith
Washington Post obituary.
Monday, January 9, 2006; Page B06
Mike Smith,
59, a drummer who for 40 years accompanied many leading jazz and
pop musicians in Washington and around the world, died of prostate
cancer Jan. 2 at his home in Silver Spring.
Mr. Smith settled in Washington in the mid-1960s and soon worked
with pianist Bobby Timmons at the city's then-premier jazz venue,
the Bohemian Caverns.
"Smitty
is just amazing," the club's owner, Tony Taylor, said later
in an interview with Washingtonian magazine. "I never heard
a young cat with that kind of maturity and swing."
Mr. Smith's
inventive approach to drumming allowed him to depart from strict
time-keeping without losing the music's basic form. In 1967, less
than two years after his arrival here, he was hired by Roberta Flack,
with whom he toured for four years as the singer rose to stardom.
Mr. Smith described
himself as "the ultimate sideman." His musical rsum included
such well-known figures as Randy Brecker, John Abercrombie, Billy
Eckstein, Astrud Gilberto, Freddie Hubbard, Herb Ellis, Leni Stern,
Bobby Scott and Milt Jackson.
He performed
with the Eddie Henderson Quintet and accompanied singer-pianist
Mose Allison from 1984 to 1990. Mr. Smith frequently toured Europe
and appeared with Adam Mackowicz at the North Sea Jazz Festival
in 1985 and 1987. He also recorded and toured with pianist Steve
Kuhn and saxophonist Dave Liebman.
Locally, he
performed with dozens of musicians, including the late Keter Betts.
He recorded extensively in a variety of settings and continued to
perform until weeks before his death.
Mr. Smith was
born in Meadville, Pa., and was introduced to jazz by his father,
who had a large record collection.
He studied with
a local drummer, Cootie Harris, and was visiting jam sessions with
his older brother, a guitarist, when he was 12. He was performing
professionally by age 14. He studied music at Youngstown State University
in Ohio and at Howard University.
His marriage
to Sharon Hoefler ended in divorce.
Survivors
include three brothers, John M. Smith of Franklin, Pa., Thomas P.
Smith of Hyattsville and Timothy Smith of Silver Spring." (www.washingtonpost.com)

GOOD
CHARLOTTE Q&A FROM HFSTIVAL 2003
Lead
singer Joel Madden and bassist Billy Martin took the initiative
at their press conference, asking the press how they were doing.
Some answers to media questions revealed: Joel’s favorite
GC song is “The Story of My Old Man,” one of Billy’s
is “My Bloody Valentine”; Joel: “Every show has
a really cool rock ‘n’ roll moment whether it’s
for 300 kids or 300,000”; GC flew in from Denver to play the
HFStival, after their show they left for Boston.
Music
Monthly: Where did all those plaques and trophies in your new video,
“The Young and the Hopeless” come from?
Joel:
We just basically went out and found them in thrift stores, Salvation
Army, and places like that. They were all real awards.
MM:
Did you come to the HFStival before you started played it?
Joel:
I started coming to the HFStival when I was 15. This is our fifth
year of playing it. All together, I’ve probably been to ten
of them.
MM:
What bands did you go to hear?
Joel:
Green Day.
Billy:
Bands that I remember seeing are Silver Chair, Rage Against the
Machine. Pretty much every year one of our favorite bands have played
the HFStival. Green Day was pretty memorable, when they lit the
drum kit on fire. That was pretty awesome.
Joel:
Rage was awesome.
MM:
Is living the rock ‘n’ roll dream what you thought it
would be?
Joel:
In a lot of ways, everything and more. And then in some ways, you
know, it’s not what you thought it would be. But there’s
never a moment when you can really complain because if the worst
of your problems are those kind of problems like traveling and being
tired, you know? I was tired when I was working at Target or wherever
else I was working, so I don’t mind being tired, and I love
what we do, so we have a great time.
MM:
You’ve played benefits for kids. Are there other social issues
you care about?
Joel:
A lot of things, plenty of social causes. There’s a group
in DC called Positive Force that we work with. We actually just
did a benefit with them that was really awesome. It’s positiveforcedc.org,
if you’re interested, check it out. They work with homeless
people and others in DC. There are things I get involved with, like
different AIDS organizations, kids with AIDS, stuff like that. We’ve
done a lot of stuff. Anything we can do.
MM:
Did you have any teachers who inspired you?
Billy:
Not musically or anything - I pretty much went through school never
liking teachers – but I did have one in the 7th grade, a guy
named Mr. Jones. He was just a good teacher.Joel: I had a teacher
in high school [La Plata], 10th grade, whose name was Ms. Warren.
She was just really cool. I got horrible grades in her class, but
she really understood me. She didn’t make me feel like I was
stupid.
